its basically the C4D model of perpetual license + service agreement. cause in a lot of ways for a lot of people it kinda does. On the flip side, I also understand why people will say it makes more sense now to use Houdini. It's kinda the same way they leverage XP to sell Cycles by having features in Cycles for XP that dont exist on other render engines. I think it makes sense for them, they're leveraging the fact that theyre the only game in town with an easy to use integrated solution. So yeah - I'm happy Insydium is securing the income stream to XP in order to really keep building it out.

Sure - once you make it to the big time and you're consistently making over 100K per year, you're then expected to move over to the much more expensive Houdini FX license - but by the time you're that comfortable in your career - you're way more aware of what brings you return on your investments for software and buying XP and a Houdini FX license probably isnt that big a deal if you deem it worth it. Not to mention - adding Houdini to your arsenal makes you extremely desirable to a lot of bigger studios that use it for more complex simulations that again - XP can't pull off. It's easier to access, the commercial version for the vast majority of motion artists is now cheaper, and it can do more. So regardless of what the packages represent - you also can't blame people for saying that Houdini is now a better overall choice than XP. On top of that - Houdini is just more capable of more stuff than XP is. The same cant be said for XP which requires a 740 dollar purchase before you can even start using it, and then another 240/yr to stay current. to do commercial projects you spend 200 bucks a year for 2 years.

To learn houdini theres a totally free version. Either way - when you look at those selections from a small business persons perspective - Investing in XP over the long run is more expensive than investing in Houdini Indie.
And Indie isn' t some gimped version, its basically Houdini FX for people who make under 100K. If you want to do complex particle systems and use Cinema4D as your base program - the only options are really X-particles and Houdini Indie. I'm just trying to say that the people who are upset are just as justified. XP is great - and its been getting better, if this price increase is a way to keep it going on the upward trajectory its going on then, yeah - thats what it takes. I'm not blaming Insydium for anything - like I said, im not really arguing for or against either side. Houdini Indie is the anomaly here, not xparticles. I can see the obvious issue that the larger company is to a degree pricing out a smaller competitor, but I don't think you can blame the smaller guys for charging what they need to for the product they make. Houdini Indie is just a little sideline for SideFX to squeeze a little more cash out of people who normally wouldn't have paid them anything at all. Xparticles is Insydium's primary source of income, this is where they need to charge enough to stay afloat.
