Metadata helps publicize and support the data you or your organization have produced. I refer to this as the FGDC standard even though FGDC deals with other standards as well, such as the Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS). The standard referred to in this document is the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Predictability is assured only by conformance to standards. Online systems for handling metadata need to rely on their ( metadata is plural, like data) being predictable in both form and content. In essence, metadata answer who, what, when, where, why, and how about every facet of the data that are being documented. Metadata are used to provide documentation for data products. Metadata consist of information that characterizes data.
